PWE or bubble mailer? The shipping math that decides your margin

Shipping is the only selling cost you fully control — and on cards under $20 it's routinely the largestcost of the sale. The choice between a plain white envelope (PWE) and a tracked bubble mailer isn't a style preference; it's a break-even calculation with three inputs.

The two cost profiles

PWE — a stamp, an envelope, a penny sleeve, a toploader or cardboard sandwich: roughly $1.00–1.50 all-in. No tracking, so a lost or "lost" package is a full refund out of your pocket, and most marketplaces side with the buyer when there's no scan trail.

Tracked bubble mailer (eBay Standard Envelope or ground service) — mailer, padding, label: roughly $2.50–5.00 all-independing on service and weight. Tracking converts "item not received" disputes from automatic losses into winnable cases.

The break-even framework

PWE loss rates in practice run around 1–3% (damage, loss, and claim abuse combined). The expected cost of shipping a card PWE is therefore not $1.25 — it's $1.25 + (loss rate × the refund you'd eat). Set that against the tracked cost and the cutover falls out:

Tracking pays for itself when: loss rate × sale price > (tracked cost − PWE cost).
At a 2% loss rate and a $2.25 cost gap, that line sits near $112 on pure expected value — but disputes also cost the item itself, seller-metric damage, and time. Price those in and most sellers land at a practical $20–30 cutover: PWE below it, tracked above it.

The second-order effects always push the cutover down, not up: repeated PWE disputes hurt seller ratings, and one $75 loss erases the savings from fifty PWE shipments. Cheap to ship is not the same as cheap to have shipped.

Rules of thumb that survive contact with reality

  • Under ~$20: PWE, sleeved + toploader, and price the occasional loss in as a cost of doing business.
  • $20–50: tracked — this is where disputes cluster, because it's worth a scammer's time but common enough to be believed.
  • Over ~$50: tracked with insurance; over ~$250, signature confirmation (many marketplaces require it for seller protection).
  • Batch your PWE supplies in bulk — the difference between $0.25 and $0.60 per-unit supplies is a full margin point across a year.

Costs are typical mid-2026 US figures — verify current postal rates and your marketplace's seller-protection rules. Not financial advice.
